Memories of Fast Food Eatings(1st poem at 210)

it's a blessing it seems
lazy melodies of dreams
walk beside me now
I know you can recognize
that lonesome look in your eyes
from daydream pleasantries
others who remark to you
about the belly laughter
funny how lonesome is what it is
and nothing makes it go away
nothing brings me down
like my home town
I saw a friend on the street today
she only had kind words to say
about me and my dignity
there is that self-respect again
all that I show to everyone I meet
because,people are important
you know who you are
so far away
so far
away

Once,I Was Good

as we all try
to control our fears
it's a blue-crisp summer mourn
after the violent tropical storm
the eye of Irene pasted
over the virginia coast
7 pm around suppertime
I am 100 miles inland
north of Richmond
most lost their electricity
we were lucky and got off easy
as I am filled with comfort
for my up comming move
tomorrow I get the key
tomorrow I start
to get all of my things
objects I belong to
material possessions
that hold no life
but,are apart of my life
enough value to keep
pick-up and place
into a new space
to take and make up
all that is my home
surrounded by places
faces in the crowd
my mind with have to combine
why I choose who
treat all with respect
strangers & friends
I know how lucky I am
to have my mind
I just love how I think
I am a person worth knowing
I have done so much growing
people change
I am proof
I place my faith
in the power of friendship
I can be a good friend
I try
to control my fears
of the people I left
now 10 years ago
people are strange
no one can hang on
to hatetred like I can
loathing like I can
I am honest with myself
about why I can now
trust in me
the respect I show others
is the respect I keep for myself
respect is earned
respect is important
even when I was learning
about friendship
I never knew why
those great people in my life
were so important
like the first few friends I had
they demanded from me
respect
significance with consequence
I had to give unto myself
I had to earn their trust
to get their love
we all grew together
I lived better then
I had a direction home
I was not unknown
Once,I was good

Sobriety Blues

With a heavy heart & a weary mind I write this:

thinking about you
and feeling so blue
I do know how to
take the belt to myself
thinking into a funk
about all the things
I need to say to you
I am honest with myself
and that means
I'm ready to grow
when I'm not doing
my time
in the prison I built
alone in my cell
my living hell
changing the past
is a hopeless business
when everyday I try
to live in peace
and know I can't live
with suicidal longings
I can't afford to act
rashly & foolishly
with all this sober
time to think
about my life
all my wrong doings
to hurt and grieve
it's hard to believe
how I allowed myself
to fall so deep
into the depths
of degeneration
living with no conscience
in the early part of my life
thoughts of an individual
not knowing wrong from right
my conscience is overwhelming
I can't take my life
or think that way
but,I have on so many past days
dwelling the hours away
I feel the pain
I break my own heart
all the memories
and a world of guilt
past the time
in this prision I built
walls are sturdy & strong
I don't have anywhere to go
nowhere to belong
I don't hide my face
all that troubles me
and keeps me from being free
I'm sure y'all are doing fine
you will always be in my mind
I'm forced to live in my head
on top of my mountain of woe
it's hard to grow
when you suffer from need
forgiveness is gold
today,a new chance
to be bold and say
"I'm going to live for today"
with this day I take a chance
to live free
and just be
me

Time To Think

I don't take time to drink
all my cares and woes
I wrap my troubles in dreams
I know it's okay to smile
after so much blues
the sunshine always
follows the rain
I have learned
and don't want to
go through it again
whiskey is temporary
I need to know now
not to escape reality
me and how I grow
it means so much
to mellow down easy
thinking and staying busy
writing & mixing
filling up the page with thoughts
I think therefore I am
practiced in the arts
I can mend my broken heart
with enough time to think
I don't take time to drink

Tender Hearted Man

sometimes I feel compassion
for myself and the way I grow
I am afraid of
all those people
I used to know
seeing where I've been
shows me where to go
empathy for the things
people's opinions should not
matter because they don't know
all they know is a person
that has disappeared
gone for good
sobriety gives me plenty
of time to think
thinking into a funk
with no break from reality
the reality of myself
good and bad qualities
without the knowledge
I harshly judge myself
I want to cause myself pain
it's not love
it's not smart
I break my own heart
I need compassion
to see myself in a new light
this move will help me
create good times with
real people and real ideas
to contemplate
to consider thoroughly
my purpose

As very few, if any, of you may remember, I joined the mixing community as a refugee of the gardenweb soil & compost forum. Many an afternoon I had spent with a mix CD and a Stag, rooting around in my compost pile. So much so, that I had posted my first cybermix, Garden 1, there and it was immediately put in an “off - topic” wing of their forum and I never found it again. So I picked up my marbles and found a new place to play, which is how I landed at Art of the Mix.
Five years later, I am still mixing and still composting. I prefer the open - pile compost method, much like I do with mixing. When we moved into our current residence, I laid down some pink foam sheets as a base to keep the roots out and then a plastic canvas on top of that. My pile is located in the cool shade of a walnut tree, which makes it mighty fine for having a Stag in the afternoon, but not so good I found out for keeping roots out of the pile. Despite my best efforts to block off the bottom, I had the bloody walnut roots coming in through the sides and around the end. And even though my other uncle (not the back to back to basics one) tells me that the poisonous aspect of walnut roots is a myth, the last thing I want is for the big ole tree to siphon off all of the nutrients from my pile.
So now I am in the middle of digging out all of the compost, the in - progress I piled to one side, to shovel back in when I’m done, and the finished compost is going in the front yard. I am hoping it is truly “finished” because last year, I filled in a bunch of places with compost in front and now have a bumper crop of cilantro & basil where I wanted grass to be. I am not that much of a wood hippie to replace fescue with cilantro….
In any case, I am nearly done with the excavating, about half the tarp is exposed so I can lay a new one over-top, blocking off the main entry points for the blessed walnut tree.
Which brings us to the point of the mix, I threw a whole slew of these artists together on shuffle in my “gimnasio roquero” playlist (rocking gym, even though it is more of a Stag & compost lineup). As I listened the other day, there was a nice run with the CCD and Charlie Poole and some of the others that made me think of my good friend, and fellow Gutbucket Brother, Texas Hobart.
So, Tex, this is for you, may the sun shine on your back and your compost pile always be free of roots!
